Wu Zuqiang
well-known Chinese composer, musicologist and educator, graduated from the
Central Conservatory of Music in China in 1952 and later from the Tchaikovsky
Conservatory of Music in Moscow in 1958. He has been appointed lecturer,
professor and President of the Central Conservatory of Music. He is now
the Honorary President of the Co0nservatory. He is also Vice Chairman of
the Chinese Musicians Association and China Federation of Literature and
Art Circle, a standing member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative
Conference and a member of the Educational and Cultural Committee of the
CPPCC, Advisor for the China National Symphony Orchestra.
His musical compositions embody a wide range, such as vocal works, chamber
music, concerts, ballet music and music for drama and cinema. The dance
dramas “The Mermaid” and “The Red Detachment of Women” have a great influence
on the development of China’s contemporary dance music. For many years he
devoted himself to combining Chinese folk music and traditional instruments
with western orchestra, his arrangement for chamber orchestra of the ancient
piece ”The Moon reflected in Erquan Fountain ”, the Pipa Concerto, etc.
have won warm acclaim whenever performed in China or abroad. His musical
textbook “Musical Forms and Analysis of Works” has been awarded a prize
of the Best University Textbooks. He has also written many articles and
essays, nearly one million words. Selected Works of Wu Zuqiang “The Sunglow
Collection” was published by the China Federation of Literature and Art
Circles in its “Evening Glow Library” in 1997. More than 40 years of his
endeavors in the field of music education, he has raised quite a number
of music talents.
He has been the juror and organizer of many important national and international
music competitions. So far, he is the Artistic Director of China International
Violin Competition (Qingdao)
He enjoys world-wide reputation. His name is included in “World Who’s Who”
of the International Biographical Center in Cambridge and the American Biographical
Institute.
